Johnny Rizzo knocks in the winning run
(BROOKLYN, 7/10/1999) Brooklyn was the first stop for the 1999 Stickball Classic. The event opened up with a serious longball competition with about 40 people participating. The winner Andre "Sammy Sosa" Liberato of Sunset Park whacked it 280 feet, just beating out Larry Salvato of Marine Park who hit it 275 feet.

After the longball competition, the first game commenced, between the Brooklyn based E 36th Street Fanatics and the Brookville Bombers from Staten Island. It was a good close game, but the visiting team (Brookville Bombers) took the win. After seeing the Brooklyn team fall, a neighborhood crew got together representing Neil's Luncheonette, the corner store, to try and restore the glory for Brooklyn. However, the team was clearly outclassed with the score 13-2. We were just happy no one got hurt cause some of these guys hadn't played in 20 years!

Streetplay did live coverage of the event and took lots of photos (see links on the side of this page). Congratulations to the Brookville Bombers, E 36th St Fanatics, Neil's Luncheonette and all the peoeple who came out to play or watch. It was a good time for all.
