Here's what's old on Streetplay
Fellow Streetplay readers,
To paraphrase Martha and the Vandellas, summer's here, and the
time is right for playing in the street! With school out and
the mercury rising, we're happy to present you with our version
of a solstice celebration.
Streetplay and the Smithsonian
------------------------------
This year, the Smithsonian Folklife festival features NYC. On
June 27-July 1 and July 4-July 8, Washington DC's National Mall
will be filled with all kinds of people and exhibits to give a
taste of what makes the Big Apple so unique. The Smithsonian
asked Streetplay to teach the full range of urban games, and
they've built a brownstone facade with an adjacent old-time
candy store on the Mall to recreate the experience! We'll be
presenting all our favorites, like stickball, hopscotch,
stoopball, and skully. If you're in the area, please come and
play with us.

Rulesheets: collect them all
----------------------------
One of the most requested features of Streetplay are the rules
of the games we cover. In response, we developed what we call
the "rulesheet"--single page descriptions of games meant to be
printed and brought to your local street or schoolyard. If
you're new to any of our games and want to get started, go here
first.

The newest gallery: Urban Skateboarding
---------------------------------------
Before the X-Games, before skateboard shops came to the malls,
city kids built jumping ramps from plywood and milk crates and
created their own extreme sport. We welcome photographer Tom
Callan as he captures the essence of urban skateboarding.

Contest: Memories of Dad (win $50)
----------------------------------
With Fathers' Day just passing, not to mention our Smithsonian
gig being in the town named after the father of our country, it
got us thinking: we all have a story about Pops. Tell us your
favorite--if we like yours the best, you get $50, and so does
your favorite charity.

Book review: The Games We Played
--------------------------------
Celebrities ranging from Bill Clinton to Rob Reiner reminisce
about their childhood games in Steven Cohen's delightful new
book "The Games We Played." Read our review and get the
literary lowdown.

We're really excited to be working with the Smithsonian, and
hope you can hook up with us in D.C. during the next 2 weeks.
Keep playing and have a great summer!
