Hall of Famers honored in Manhattan

Sooner or later, our luck had to give. The gorgeous weather that had marked this year's stickball classic dates came to an end today in Manhattan. Intermittant showers made it impossible to get the longball competition started, let alone the team games. However the weather had no impact on indoor activities, including the special display and ceremony at the Museum of the City of New York.

Over 20 local Stickball Hall of Famers received a special certificate from Curtis Sliwa and the Daily News in recognition to their contribution to the game. Fans also had a chance to spend some indoor time looking over the photo exhibit featuring some new shots, most notably a great one of Jennifer Lopez. A couple of years ago, several Stickball Hall of Famers worked with JLo to make sure she got just the right pose for her stickball scene in her recent film "Enough." The actress showed her appreciation by renting out a movie theatre and inviting neighborhood kids to a special preview showing of the film. She kicked in refreshments and then made a special in-person appearance at the event. scoring big with neighborhood residents who appreciated the good faith and "class act."

Depending upon the upcoming weather and make-up dates, the Manhattan competition will either be rescheduled or Carlos Diaz, president of the Stickball Hall of Fame and a group of other players will represent the borough in the final competitions. And of course, the finals will take place at one of the borough more interesting fields, Vandebilt Ave, on the side of Grand Central Terminal, the most interesting "pinball like field" you could ever see (see past event coverage).

There is plenty more stickball to come. If you are interested in fielding a team for the 2003 competition or if you want to help publicize the tournament, contact us.
