The Bad Boys were the winners of the 2001 NY Emperors Memorial Day Tournament.
The Bad Boys erupted for five big runs late in the game crushing the Puerto Rico Tainos 8-0 to win the Emperors 2001 Memorial Day Tournament. While the Tainos had shown great determination to defeat the two other top ranked teams, the Bad Boys proved why they are without a doubt as strong as any other team in the sport. They've won the East Harlem Stickball League Championship two years running; they've frequently been the top team in the Jersey City tournaments and most recently, they were the runners up in last year's Columbus Day event. This weekend, the Bad Boys played close to perfect.

In order to make it to the finals, the Bad Boys had to defeat the two teams who had won last year's major Bronx tournaments, the Latin Dukes (winners of Memorial Day 2000) and the Youngbloods (Columbus Day winners). The two teams who led in this year's tournament play, the Bronx Emperors and Extra Gold were each defeated by the Tainos. It was only the third time in the tournament's sixteen years that there were no Bronx teams in the finals.

Although they showed offensive muscle in their 8-0 victory over the Tainos, the other Bad Boys playoff wins were low scoring struggles. Good defense and taking advantage of their opportunities was the formula that the team rode to success.

Long and Short of it

  • The Latin Dukes were blocked of any chance for a three-peat when they were defeated 1-0 by the Bad Boys in the semi-finals. The single run came in late in the game on a tough fielder's choice.
  • The Bronx Knights, the team leading in the Emperors League regular standings did not make the finals, although they had a +10 ratio losing several close games.
  • For the fourth tournament in a row, Extra Gold placed at the top in the tournament play but were eliminated in the first round of the playoff competition.
  • The San Diego Knights fielded a strong team which lost only one game in the tournament before being eliminated in the playoffs. San Diego and showed they were getting ready for the Labor Day Tournament.
