Competitors and Contributors Honored

On November 15, the Inner City Handball Association (ICHA) held its annual awards ceremony honoring some of the game's top players. As it so happens, many of the sports top players are also closely affiliated with this important organization.

Longtime supporters and board members of the ICHA, Dori Ten Barbara Canton- Jackson, received the female athletes of the year award for winning the women's doubles at last year's World and this year's National championships. Tracy Davis and active member of the organization received an award for winning the women's open singles at this year's Nationals. Former junior member, now adult champion, Cesar Sala received an award for the second year in a row for winning the men's singles at this year's Nationals and last year's Worlds.

As for the current junior crew, Alvaro Rebaza's award received some well deserved recognition for his winning the 19 & under Jr one wall National title as well as the C singles four wall Nationals. Dennis Machuca was honored for taking the 19 & under High School Meet and PSAL City wide Handball Championship

Another notable honoree was John "Rookie" Wright, legendary big blue player who won the NYC Big Blue Championships for the last three years. In addition Rookie successfully crossed over into the small ball category by taking this year's Mayor's Cup singles as well as the open doubles in the Nationals. Rookie accomplishments left no doubt that he was now a force in all aspects of the one-wall game.

The ICHA awards are also given in recognition for general contributions to the sport. Fred Turbee received this year's outstanding volunteer award for his untiring efforts to help out in the ICHA Brooklyn office as well his work at field events.

Contributors awards went to Claire Chappel who donated her 2000 raffle winnings of $2,500 to the ICHA Jr. Development Fund and Rob Golan for his $1000 plus contributions to ICHA in 2001.

As organized handball flourishes in NYC, ICHA award recipients have also increased. ICHA recognizes the best players in one-wall, four-wall, small ball and big blue handball.
