Lewis and Davis victorious in Mayor's Cup 2000Kendell Lewis the 1998 Mayor's Cup champion recaptured his title defeating Cesar Sala in the finals 15 -2, 15-11 on Sunday July 9th in Coney Island Brooklyn. Kendell had defeated current USHA national champion (and last year's Mayor's Cup winner) Joe Kaplan the day before in a fierce semi-final tie-breaker 11 - 15, 15 -7, 11- 8.The Pro Women Singles saw the emergence of new champion, Tracy Davis 1999 national women finalist, defeating Theresa McCourt (jr. girls champion) 15 - 8, 15 -12. Tracy defeated 1999 Mayor's Cup champion Dori Ten in an intense tie-breaker 13 - 15, 15 - 13, 11 -2. Theresa defeated 1999 runner up Gladys Miranda 15 -14, 11- 15, 11-5. Spectators were treated to excellent play and the initial foray in what could become a great rivalry. The Pro Women Doubles was swept by current World Doubles champions Karen McConney and Sydell Smith defeating Tracy Davis and Gladys Miranda in the finals 15 -6, 15 -8. Sydell's win in doubles and Kendall's singles victory was noteworthy as they are proud parents of three month old Kavon. Kavon seemed less impressed than others in the crowd with his parents ability to be focused (and in shape) so soon after having the baby. However, Kendall was not able to win both single and double honors as he and his partner Tony Roberts were defeated by Paul Williams and Eddie Maisonet 7 - 15, 15 - 10, 11 - 3. The victory maintains Williams and Maisonet's status as the team to beat in Men's Doubles. The Mayor's Cup tournament is run by the Inner City Handball Association.
