Dominguez and McCourt Shine in Mayors Cup Junior Event

The weather kept changing, but the play remained consistent in the Year 2000 Mayor's Cup Junior Handball Tournament. About 80 participants, 19 and under competed down, at the Coney Island Courts to showcase their skills and stake their claims as the best up and coming players in one-wall handball.

Ference Dominguez, the 16 year old champ featured in Streetplay's Rising Star Series captured both the 16 and under and the 19 and under singles championships. Theresa McCourt showed her stuff by winning the girls singles and capturing the girls doubles with her partner Angel Cooper (see listing of event finalists below).

Paul Williams, head of the Inner City Handball Association (ICHA), the event's sponsor, felt this was the most successful Junior Tournament to date. He explained, "In the past we'd have trouble getting permits and funding. This year the Heisman Foundation gave us $2,500 in addition to our USHA grant which allowed me to concentrate on organizing the actual event instead of raising money. We also got full cooperation from the Parks Dept. Sometimes it can be very difficult to get the permit, this time they worked with us to make sure all the details were handled."

Paul also spoke of the next big upcoming citywide handball event, the Big Blue tournament on June 17th and 18th. "There is no entry fee to participate in the Big Blue competition and the event will be held at courts throughout the City. I really feel that level of player participation in this event could determine the level of support available for One-wall handball for years to come. The City is putting some serious money into renovating hundreds of handball courts and promotion the sport. Now it's up to the players to show the City we're worth it."
