SAHA's First Major Event of Year Draws Big Crowd and Good Play.

On Saturday June 24, the St. Albans Handball Association (SAHA) held its first major tournament of the year, the Men's Open Doubles and Women's B Doubles. While the weather was hot, the real heat was coming from Ray Lopez and Willie Polanco, who demonstrated what Big Blue Doubles were about.

Twenty teams entered the Men's competition. Ray was clearly in his zone, hitting killer after killer. "Peewee and Power gave us a tough game," said Ray. "But no one was able to get 15 points on us. We were totally on." The champs convincingly defeated Herman Mendez and Eric Santiago in the finals to walk away with the prize. Both Ray and Willie are from the Sunset Park region of Brooklyn.

In the women's competition, Tracy Davis and Brenda Pares took the Round Robin event, defeating Evette Amador, Ana Rivera in the finals. For Evette and Ana, it was a tough match. Due to the luck of the draw, they had to play 6 matches, while most other teams played 4 or 5. It was an impressive showing considering it was the first time that Ana and Evette had teamed up, while Tracy and Brenda have played together a number of times.

According to Dwight Worley, President of SAHA, "This is Tracy's last event as a B player in Big Blue. She has demonstrated that she is ready to enter the A competition." Congratulations to Tracy (featured in our Rising Stars section) but now things should get really tough.
