Tracy Davis and Anna Calderon, finalists in 2003 USHA Women's Nationals.
Most Brooklynites and sports fans are familiar with the names Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair, two young men who have achieved success in professional basketball. But there is another feel good story emerging from Coney Island. Tracy Davis is carving out an excellent career in womens handball.

At the age of 27 she has already compiled an impressive resume (three national singles titles, 1 national doubles title, a couple of Mayor’s Cup singles and doubles titles and a big blue doubles title too). To keep active and maintain conditioning she has recently began playing 4-wall and had a respectable showing in the 4-wall nationals.

Tall and athletic she covers the court extremely well. An excellent retriever, volleyer, competent shot maker with a solid opposite hand, she is a formidable figure on the court. From time to time players play the “what if?” game. What if handball was on the same level as professional sports? Which of the current or past players would be successful pro athletes? Certainly a case could be made for Tracy Davis. Madison Avenue advertisers would love her. Intelligent and articulate, the Halle Berry look-a-like would be in great demand.

For now, the single working mom and student will have to settle for carrying on the tradition of champions that have played at the W5th Street handball courts and being mentioned along with Stephon and Sebastian as success stories from Coney Island.
