The USHA has been holding its national tournaments for 40 years. Some years
have been better than others. This year was a gem, marked by intense
competitions throughout the tournament and amazing finals that were a joy to
watch for any fan of the game.
Each of the open finals required tie-breakers. Robert Sostre edged out Cesar
Sala, winner of this year's Mayor's Cup, in the singles 16, (19), 8. However
Cesar gained revenge with his partner Joe Kaplan as they defeated Robert and
Kendell Lewis for the doubles win (14), 19, 6. See
coverage of open singles and
men's doubles
The women's winners were a repeat from last year. Priscilla Shumate defeated
Karen McConney, (19), 13, 4. However, Karen and her partner Adrian Floyd
defeated Barbara Canton-Jackson and Dori Ten in an extremely close match (16),
16, 9. See coverage of women's events
Last year the tournament organizers had to respond to monsoon like rains as
part of the tournament. While this year's event was marked by slight rain
delays and the threat of a storm on Sunday, all matches were completed on the
outdoor courts.
