First Annual Allentown Free Handball Tournament
Allentown, PA May 5th & 6th 2001
Special - article written by the tournament organizer William Gritter
Singles
The tournament started with the singles event held on Saturday May 5. Dark cloudy skies threatened the event, however the sun prevailed. And on the courts, no two players shined more than Angel and Richie from New York City. Angel disposed of his opponents with great hustle and shot making, and Richie's serve and court savvy earned him a trip to the finals.
The close friends went head to head, Angel scored early and frequently. Richie clawed back, but in the end Angel's speed prevailed. The two NY boys from Brooklyn (Alex and Ray) made their presence felt, however this was Angel's day, winning the trophy with no losses.
Congratulations to Angel, and all the players that showed up for the singles event.
Doubles
Sunday May 6 marked the doubles event and 24 teams entered the competition. Many Philly teams showed up and these boys were hungry. Ivan and Ray from Philly were early favorites But they were not the ones to dominate. Instead, after a tough
1st round win 17-15 against Theo and Rusty from Allentown, it was Wally and Los who showed they were ready to digest victory. Their cool and collective play earned them a ride to the finals undefeated. At the finals they met Dave and Carlos also from Philadelphia. Since Wally and Los were undefeated Dave and Carlos would have to beat them twice. Dave and Carlos came out with guns blazing, however Wally and Los recovered quickly and were victorious.
Team effort
During the tourney many friends were made and many hot dogs were eaten. Much thanks to my moms (Tina)and stepfather (Calvin)for those great grilled dogs. I got to give special thanks to dawn, Calvin, and Mari for all their help. I would also like to thank Migdog and Harold for hyping up the tournament.
Thanks to all the players and people involved in making Allentown's handball organization's first annual tournament a successful one.
