Queens Longball Competition
September 9
Ricardo Torres, a member of the Bronx Emperors beat out 23 competitors to take this week's long ball contest with a 285 foot smash.
Ricardo won an American Express Gift Certificate and will return to compete in the Longball final competition. He and 16 other contestants also won a Daily News 2 sewer pin for hitting the ball 200+ feet.
Steve Mercado came in second with a strong 280 drive. As head umpire for the Stickball Classic 2000 event, Steve has been at all the contests and this was the third occasion where he came in second place, each time missing by only 5 feet! Steve was clearly feeling a bit frustrated, though he took some solace in knowing he probably had an insurmountable lead in combined footage category.
Irwin Epstein, the oldest longball competitor also won a 2 sewer pin by knocking the ball 205 feet. The youngest player, 8 year old Vincent Davino didn't win a 2 sewer pin, but represented his neighborhood well with a strong 100+ foot shot.
The following list show the 17 players who hit the ball 200 feet or more and received a Daily News 2 sewer pin.
