UAA Builds Upon Success

The United Athletic Association (UAA) is a non-profit group representing about 20 amateur adult and youth sports organizations in the NY area. Its goal is to promote recreational sports in the city and help make good use of the public resources that are supporting these activities.

Al Morales, chairman of the UAA explained. "The UAA wants to promote communication and respect among these tens of thousands of players and the hundreds of different recreational sports organizations in New York. We help smaller, neighborhood groups get started and grow. We also provide a forum where some of the larger groups can discuss issues and let the City know about the needs of the amateur sports community."

Morales stressed that the organization is already starting to have an impact. "Last year we raised $9,000 from the Mayors Cup Citywide tournament. Our member organizations also contributed another $16,000 enabling us to donate $25,000 to the Citywide Youth Softball tournament. This tournament, run by the Parks Department, is kicking off in April and will involve kids from all over the City."

Streetplay will be working with the UAA to keep you informed about the major issues in recreational sports and to report on some of the member organization's games and activities. We'll also provide our personalized "Streetplay" coverage, highlighting the players and other people involved. Please let us know if you have a story about yourself or a teammate that you'd like to share.
