OOHA Hosts Zerega TournamentThe OOHA (Our Own Handball Association) hosted a Big Blue tournament this weekend at Zerega's handball center in the Bronx. Thirty eight teams showed up for the doubles competitions. In the men's competition, Rookie and Randy defeated Power and Ben in the finals 21-17. First place was awarded a $300 prize and $140 went to the second place finishers. TeeTee and Dana won the womens' competition over Gladys and Evette. The women's 1st and 2nd place prizes were smaller ($80 and $40) since less players entered the competition. This year, OOHA has hosted a number of tournaments at various locations throughout NYC. The organization hopes to create a large membership of handball players from NYC interested in participating in tournaments and in promoting the sport. The next tournament is scheduled for Nov 13th. Tyrone and Vanessa, shown in the picture above are President and Secretary of the organization. They met at the courts 9 years and more recently became a couple. Like many of the couples featured in these pages, Ty and Vanessa have played together but they found it strained the relationship. They have instead focused on working together to develop OOHA and have found this to be positive experience.
