HES "play day," Men's Pro-Doubles & Women's Pro-Singles

Once again the best players gathered to do battle on the indoor one-wall courts at the HES. The day started off at 7AM with a "play day", run by Artie Fuchs, composed of players from throughout the tri-state area. At 10:30AM the Men's Pro-Doubles and Women's Pro-Singles commenced.
In the Men's Doubles, several old combinations were broken up and new teams were formed. Spectators were treated to some fabulous action as MVPs Robert Sostre and relative new-comer Ervin Irizarry dominated the Men's Doubles event, without having to play a tie-breaker.
Spectators noted that Rob was clearly in the "zone." Commenting on his game, Rob stated "I was feeling good and strong, and was able to put other things out of my mind. Normally I don't kill the ball, I'm more into volleys, drives and letting other players make mistakes, but on Sunday I was killing a lot of shots and able to get to everything that came near me. Ervin was playing really good too and we were even getting some lucky breaks. It was all coming our way."
A lower than usual number of entries, as a result of pregnancies, etc., resulted in a round robin format for the women's singles. Still the play was good and the finals were extremely interesting as 3 hinders were called before Tracey could score the last point on a deep drive.
