|
Maisonet Takes Millenium's First One-Wall EventThe first one-wall handball event of the millenium (ok - the season) was held on March 12, at the Hebrew Educational Society (HES) courts in Brooklyn. The event included B-Doubles and Pro-AM Singles. Eddie Maisonet, a well known handball champion emerged as today's Singles winner. Jason Deangelis and Joe Heins took the B Doubles Competition.Maisonet defeated Robert Sostre 21-8 and 21-15 to take the finals in the single event. Maisonet reached the finals by defeating Cesar Sala in their semi-final match 21-19 and 21- 12. Sostre defeated current National's champion Joe Kaplan in a tie-breaker 11-5 after splitting the two games 19-21 and 21-16. Maisonet discussed his feelings about the match. "Whenever Rob and I face each other it tends to be intense. Knowing that he had a very tough semi-finals match, I felt that he might be a bit tired out, and I came in feeling strong. My serve was on and I played the kind of aggressive game I needed to win." "We've had a good rivalry for close to ten years, with lots of mutual respect. Sometimes Rob wins, sometimes I do. Today it was my turn." The event was organized by former One-wall champion Albert Apuzzi and Artie Fuchs another longtime member of the USHA. Apuzzi has been working with Mosheet Paskat the Athletic Director for HES in order to make handball a major activity at the gym. According to Mosheet since HES hosted last year's National On-Wall Championship, a number of players have joined. She said "We have a special membership discounts for handball players and this gives them use of the handball courts, swimming pool, weight room and other facilities. We're open all week from 7:30 in the morning till 9:45 at night." For more information about membership and upcoming events call Mosheet at (718) 241-3000. Full listing of competition: Pro-Am Singles
