First Handball Tournament of the Millenium

Handball's new millennium opened on Saturday Jan 8 in Rockville Center NY at the ICHA's Long Island Open Four Wall Championship.

Approximately one hundred players participated in this year's event, including a strong junior contingent. According to Paul Williams, the tournament's organizer, a strong showing by the younger players was a major goal. "The Long Island Championship is one of the only opportunities for local kids to enter a 4 wall tournament. If we hope to produce handball future handball champions from this region, we need to make sure they have ample opportunity to compete."

The LI Open includes a wide range of categories. The following players won their competitions:

  • Open Singles: Kendell Lewis defeated Wayne Barone Jr. 21-11, 21 - 9
  • Open Doubles: Eric Klarman/Jaikoran Ragoo defeated Kendell Lewis/Joe Kaplan 21-13, 21-12
  • B Singles: Bruce Diccico defeated Mike Watson 21-4, 21-1
  • B Doubles: Andy Rousseau / Dorian Tunnell defeated Ference Dominguez/Mike Watson 21-17, 21-18
  • C Singles: Andy Rousseau defeated Dorian Tunnell 21 - 16, 21 - 17
  • Junior Singles: Ference Dominguez defeated Juan Gomez 21 - 10, 21 - 11
  • 40+ Doubles: Ken Ginty Jr./ Paul Williams defeated Mario Angrisani/Glen Hall 11-21, 21-10, 11-3
  • 50+ Singles: Mark Gershiwitz defeated Ed Todd 21-14, 21-20
  • 50+ Doubles: Al Green/Graham Palmore defeated Gerry Donnelley / Charlie Pelligrini 7-21, 21-7, 11-9
  • 60+ Singles: Richard Binder defeated Frank Drost default
  • 60+ Doubles: Mike Grifone/John McNulty defeated Ron Fox/ Steve Trigg 21-3, 19-21, 11-1
Thanks to Sportset for hosting event
The Long Island Four Wall Championship was hosted by the Sportset Racquet Club. The club has one of the best four wall handball/racquetball facilities in Nassau County. In addition, there are a full range of other programs and equipment including weights, aerobics, a physical therapy center and more.
